     Generally speaking, 
figurines were made as 
grave goods to accompany 
the deceased into the 
afterlife.  In the Han 
period, in addition to 
pottery figurines, there 
were also a large number 
of wooden figurines.  Such 
figurines normally occur 
in pairs or groups, rather 
than singly.
